ArtCenter's 3rd year product design class focuses on social and sustainability factors in design process. The project is currently on exhibit at ArtCenter Student Gallery. *This project is not related to the actual brand Bauhaus and Kaffeform and only used for educational purposes.

BAUHAUS CHESS SET BY JOSEF HARTWIG: ORIGINAL PRODUCT TO REDESIGN 

First designed at the Bauhaus

School Workshop in 1923.

A modern chess set focusing

on one function: movement.

Naef Spiele is known for high craft wooden toys. 

They mass produces it for $368.82 with limited access.

Bauhaus' intention was to be functional & to reach mass users.

Despite the issues, it uses single bio material, has low footprint & long lifespan.

WHY?

We are taking waste from a working industry.

Germany & Switzerland are 2nd & 3rd biggest coffee drinkers in the world.

Coffee shops in the country makes 120 billion waste/year.

3D DEVELOPMENT

1 Sizing the pieces

2 Finding ways to combine the storing box with the board. Flipped box to also elevate board?

3 What kind of lids?

4 Wood joinery inspired! Board can turn into a box? Using puzzle hinges.

5 Multiple iterations was done to get the puzzle right & fits

6 Engrave the checkers to get rid of paint use

WHY?

Efficient material, fun / adds play, no need to use adhesives.

Rounded shape needs to be able to stand without adding form

USER STORY

2 OPEN BOX

Read the guide on the back wall of the box.

And open the box by lifting one of the sides' joinery.

4 CHESS TIME!

Set all the pieces on the board.

And play!

1 PURCHASE

Purchase the product at common coffee houses, toy stores, or online.

The paper packaging is not glued, so open by simply unfolding it. 

 

(Don't forget to recycle it!).

3 PLAY SOME PUZZLE (SET UP)!

Take out the chess pieces. Then unfold all the joinery from all sides, turning the box into puzzle pieces.

Now put them back together, as a flat plane to make the board.

5 CIRCULAR STORY, CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The product is designed as a heritage item, that you can keep pass down in your family.

 

Alternative take back is also offered. You can mail it to the producer, or return it where you buy it (and get a discount card!).

 

Your product will be donated to schools, hospitals, libraries, orphanages, and community centre before being recycled.
